Business Roundtable Begins Legislator of the Year Award in Honor of Governor Voinovich
During the 2021 annual meeting dinner reception, the Ohio Business Roundtable announced it is establishing an award for elected officials that will be known as the George V. Voinovich Partner for a Prosperous Ohio Award. The first installment of the award was presented to Ohio House Speaker Bob Cupp (R-Lima) during the dinner.
The new award is named in honor of the late Ohio Governor who was the driving force behind the creation of the Ohio Business Roundtable in 1992. During his time as Mayor of Cleveland, Governor Voinovich began a committee of business CEOs to help support and guide pro-business policies for the city. After being elected Governor, Voinovich began a similar statewide group—the Ohio Business Roundtable—whose first major issue to tackle was stabilizing a broken BWC system, which at the time was referred to as “the silent killer of jobs.”
OBRT President and CEO, Pat Tiberi, presented the inaugural award to Speaker Bob Cupp in recognition of his support for the business community over the past two tumultuous years. Speaker Cupp assumed the top position in the House in the middle of the General Assembly, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the chamber deliberated on various policy initiatives impacting the business community, and Ohio as a whole, Speaker Cupp was consistent in listening to the concerns of the OBRT members and working together collaboratively in order to find solutions.
