Pat Tiberi Issues Statement on Federal Rule Requiring Insurer to Cover At-Home COVID Test Kits

COLUMBUS—Pat Tiberi, President and CEO of the Ohio Business Roundtable, issued the following statement regarding President Biden’s announcement this week that health insurance providers must cover the cost of up to eight at-home tests per person, per month starting January 15th.

“I am extremely disappointed in the federal government’s decision to place burdensome mandates on businesses that will have catastrophic financial consequences for Ohio employers. Employers are covering the cost of both vaccinations and lab-proctored testing, however mandating up to eight at-home tests per person, per month results in an exorbitant cost to the tune of millions of dollars for our largest job creators.

This impact goes beyond health insurance companies, it has significant financial consequences for the many Ohio companies that are self-insured as a means for providing their employees coverage. With businesses regaining their footing following the economic fallout from COVID-19, they are now facing yet another detrimental setback at the hands of the federal government as this rule is set to go into effect tomorrow.

I urge the Biden Administration to reconsider this onerous policy which will have an enormous impact on Ohio businesses and the health care costs of all Americans.”
